Spring Skin Reset: What to Add, What to Drop, and What to Book

Winter can be rough on your skin. Between the dry heat indoors, the cold air outside, and the way your complexion might have just kind of... given up somewhere around February — you might not be walking into spring feeling your glowiest. That's okay. That's actually exactly what spring is for.

Think of this as your skin's fresh start. Here's how to make the most of it.

First, Take Stock

Before you swap out products or add anything new, pause and actually look at your skin. Is it still feeling tight and dehydrated, or has it started getting a little oilier now that the air has more moisture in it? Are you seeing dullness, uneven texture, or hyperpigmentation that quietly built up over the winter months?

Spring skin tends to be in transition — not quite winter-dry, not quite summer-oily. Your routine needs to shift with it, and the ingredients you lean on matter more than the number of products you're using.

What to Drop

Those heavy winter moisturizers and occlusive balms did their job. But if you're still layering on the same thick cream you needed in January, you may be setting your skin up for congestion and breakouts as humidity starts to creep back up.

Consider swapping to something lighter that still delivers real hydration without sitting on top of your skin. Your skin should feel comfortable — not greasy, not tight.

Also worth reconsidering: any actives you dialed back over winter. If you got lazy with your SPF (no judgment), it's time to bring it back full-force. Spring UV levels here in the Carolinas can sneak up on you fast, especially once you start spending weekends outside again.

What to Add — And Why the Ingredients Matter

This is where spring gets exciting. Your skin has been in survival mode, and now it's ready to actually respond to the good stuff. Here are the key ingredients to focus on and what they do:

Vitamin C If there's one ingredient that belongs in your spring routine, it's vitamin C. It's a powerhouse antioxidant that brightens the skin, fades hyperpigmentation, and helps defend against the UV damage that's about to ramp up. It works best in the morning, layered under your SPF. Look for stable forms like ascorbic acid or 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid for the most reliable results.

Niacinamide This ingredient quietly does a lot. It helps even out skin tone, minimize the appearance of pores, regulate oil production (helpful as the seasons shift), and strengthen the skin barrier. It's also one of the most well-tolerated actives out there, which makes it a great option if your skin has been reactive over winter.

Exfoliating Acids (AHAs and BHAs) Winter buildup is real. Dead skin cells accumulate when the skin barrier goes into lockdown mode, and that's often what's behind that flat, dull look. AHAs like glycolic and lactic acid work on the surface to dissolve that buildup and brighten tone. BHAs like salicylic acid go a little deeper, into the pore, making them great for anyone dealing with congestion or uneven texture. The key is consistency over intensity — you don't need to over-exfoliate to get results.

Peptides If fine lines and firmness are on your radar, peptides are your spring allies. They signal the skin to produce more collagen, support elasticity, and help the skin look and feel more resilient. They're also incredibly compatible with other actives, so they layer well into almost any routine.

Hyaluronic Acid Dehydration doesn't always look like dryness — it can show up as dullness, fine lines that seem worse than usual, or skin that just looks tired. Hyaluronic acid draws moisture into the skin and holds it there, making it a year-round essential but especially important during seasonal transitions when the skin's water balance is recalibrating.

Retinol If you pulled back on retinol during winter, spring is a great time to reintroduce it or step up your frequency. It accelerates cell turnover, helps fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and is one of the most proven ingredients for fine lines and skin texture. Just go slowly, especially if you're restarting, and always pair it with SPF.

Dermalogica Product Spotlight: Spring Picks

These are some of my favorite Dermalogica products for addressing exactly what spring skin needs — and the ingredients behind why they work.

Biolumin C Serum Vitamin C is the star here, in a very stable, highly effective form that brightens the complexion and targets uneven tone and hyperpigmentation. This is the one I recommend layering under your morning moisturizer and SPF. It's a game-changer for anyone whose skin looks flat or has uneven tone coming out of winter.

Powerbright Moisturizer SPF50 Two birds, one product. This moisturizer combines brightening actives — including niacinamide — with broad-spectrum SPF50 protection. It's lightweight enough for spring and summer wear, and it pulls double duty so you're not skipping sun protection just because you're in a rush.

Dark Spot Peel This at-home treatment uses a blend of AHAs and brightening ingredients to resurface the skin and fade dark spots over time. It's the kind of product that works best with consistency — a few times a week — and it pairs really well with the Bio C Serum for a comprehensive approach to hyperpigmentation.

Stabilizing Repair Cream This rich but balanced moisturizer is formulated to calm and repair a compromised skin barrier — exactly what stressed, winter-weary skin needs heading into spring. It features soothing and barrier-restoring actives that help reduce redness and reactivity, making it a great bridge product for anyone whose skin has been sensitive or inflamed. Think of it as hitting the reset button before you start layering in your spring actives.

Exo Booster Serum This is one of my favorite treatment add-ons for skin that needs a refresh (and is even more impactful when paired with microneedling or nano infusion treatments). The Exo Booster uses exosome technology to help repair and rebuild the skin at a deeper level — supporting cell renewal, strengthening the barrier, and improving overall skin resilience. If your skin is coming out of winter looking dull, stressed, or just not quite itself, this is the kind of treatment boost that can really accelerate your results. I love pairing it with a spring facial to give the skin that extra push toward recovery and glow.

Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50 If you want one moisturizer that truly does it all, this is it. It hydrates, firms, and protects with SPF50 — and it contains peptides to support skin resilience over time. I recommend this one especially for clients focused on aging skin who want their moisturizer and sun protection in one streamlined step.

What to Book This Spring

This is one of my favorite times of year to see clients in the treatment room. Your skin has been in survival mode all winter, and now it's ready to thrive. Treatments respond better when your skin is primed and receptive.

Here's what I'd recommend considering:

Hydra-Revive Facial Microdermabrasion sweeps away the dead skin cell buildup that's been dulling your complexion all winter, CoolJet plasma rejuvenates and jumpstarts cell turnover, and targeted serums are infused into the skin using nanotechnology so the good stuff actually gets where it needs to go. One appointment, and your skin looks brighter, feels smoother, and is ready to thrive heading into spring. Add Exo Booster to elevate your results even more!

Microneedling If texture, fine lines, or hyperpigmentation are your main concerns, microneedling is one of the most effective treatments for all three. It stimulates your skin's natural repair response, boosting collagen and accelerating cell turnover. Spring is an ideal time because you can protect healing skin from UV more easily before summer heat arrives.

A Signature Facial If it's been a while, or if your skin has been doing something puzzling and you're not sure how to address it at home, book a Signature Facial. You'll enjoy a relaxing, rejuvenating facial and we can take a look at where things stand, talk through what's working and what isn't, and build a plan that makes sense for your skin right now — not a one-size-fits-all routine, but yours.

The Bottom Line

You don't need a 10-step routine. You need the right routine for where your skin is right now — and that changes with the seasons. Spring is a reset, not a reinvention. A few targeted ingredients, the right products, and a treatment or two can make a really noticeable difference heading into the warmer months.

If you're not sure where to start, that's exactly what I'm here for. Feel free to email or text me with any questions or for help scheduling your next appointment.
