The Benefits of LED Therapy
Here's a little secret: if you've had a facial with me, you've already had LED therapy.
LED is built into every facial at About Face Skin Co — it's not an add-on or an upsell, it's part of how I finish nearly every treatment. But most clients don't know what those glowing panels are actually doing for their skin. So let's fix that.
LED Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses different colors of light, each with its own benefits — from calming acne to softening fine lines to fading dark spots. No scrubbing, no downtime, no discomfort. Just light, doing real work at the cellular level.
What Is LED Therapy?
LED (Light Emitting Diode) Therapy uses varying wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin at different depths. Unlike traditional facial steps, there's no extraction or exfoliation involved — the light itself stimulates your skin's natural healing abilities. It's gentle, painless, and safe for all skin types.
During your facial, I'll choose the light color based on what your skin needs that day. Blue light targets acne-causing bacteria, red light stimulates collagen, and green light helps with pigmentation.
The Science Behind LED Therapy
LED Therapy works through a process called photobiomodulation — light energy is absorbed by your skin cells and triggers biological changes.
When the light penetrates the skin, it stimulates the mitochondria — the part of the cell responsible for producing energy. Stimulated mitochondria produce more ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of your cells. If that sounds familiar, it's because microcurrent works on the same principle — I break that down in The Science Behind the Neurotris Spark. The two treatments pair beautifully for exactly that reason.
That boost in ATP does a few things for your skin:
It accelerates cell turnover, helping skin rejuvenate and heal faster.
It stimulates collagen and elastin production, improving elasticity and softening fine lines.
It reduces inflammation and increases circulation, leading to a healthier, more radiant complexion.
In short: LED energizes your skin cells so they work more efficiently.
Different Colors, Different Benefits
Each color has a specific wavelength and penetrates the skin at a different depth, which allows for targeted treatment.
Red Light: The Anti-Aging Powerhouse
Red light penetrates deeply, stimulating collagen and elastin production to soften fine lines and wrinkles. It's one of several tools I use for aging skin — see the full lineup in A Guide to the Anti-Aging Treatments at About Face Skin Co.
Blue Light: The Acne Fighter
Blue light targets the sebaceous (oil) glands, killing acne-causing bacteria, reducing inflammation, and helping control sebum production for clearer skin.
Green Light: The Pigmentation Corrector
Green light targets melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin. By calming melanin production, it helps fade dark spots and even out skin tone. If uneven tone is your main concern, start with my full guide to hyperpigmentation — LED is one piece of that puzzle.
Professional vs. At-Home LED
At-home LED devices exist, and they can be a nice supplement — but professional panels are significantly more powerful, and in the studio, LED is layered with treatments chosen for your skin that day. Since it's included in every facial I offer, you don't have to choose: you're getting professional-grade LED every time you're on my table.
Side Effects and Safety
LED Therapy is very safe. Some people notice mild, temporary redness afterward. Eye protection during treatment is a must — which is why you'll always get goggles from me.
Getting the Most Out of LED
Like most good things in skincare, consistency is what makes LED work. Regular sessions build on each other — which is one more reason a standing facial appointment pays off. (Not sure what "regular" means for your skin? I answered that in How Often Should You Get a Facial?)
Pair your facials with a solid home routine — cleanse, moisturize, SPF — and the results compound.
The bottom line: LED therapy is one of the most scientifically-backed, zero-downtime treatments in skincare, and at About Face Skin Co, it comes with every facial. You don't need to seek it out or pay extra — you just need to book your next appointment.
